Sam Cobb, soprano, Jonathan Hanley, tenor & Jan Rautio, piano

This noted ensemble performs “The Closing of the Day”, a song recital, with songs by Dowland, Handel, Mozart, Strauss, Brahms, Debussy, Robert Schumann and Amy Beach. The programme will be a medley of two voices, solo voices and a piano solo.

Sam Cobb is a British soprano. Originally from Birmingham, she is currently based in the Netherlands, having obtained a master’s degree with Distinction in Early Music Vocal Performance at the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague.  She also holds an undergraduate degree in Music from Royal Holloway in London and a masters in Musicology from the University of Birmingham.

Recent solo engagements include numerous tours with John Eliot Gardiner and the Constellation Choir & Orchestra including J.S. Bach’s Mass in B Minor, Mendelssohn’s Lobgesang & Mozart’s Mass in C minor.  As an ensemble singer, Sam has performed with the Constellation Choir and Orchestra, Nederlandse Bachvereniging, the Choir of the Age of Enlightenment, The Monteverdi Choir and The Sixteen. Sam is a founding member of Echo Vocal Ensemble and has helped develop and deliver their projects since its conception in 2017.

Jonathan Hanley read History at the University of York, where he was a choral scholar at York Minster. After graduating, he spent three years as a lay clerk at Peterborough Cathedral and was a member of the ‘Genesis Sixteen’ programme for young singers. He is now a freelance singer and a member of the vocal ensemble, Stile Antico.

Jonathan has performed as a soloist internationally, appearing with the Constellation Choir, the Monteverdi Choir, and English Baroque Soloists as well as the English Concert, the OAE, Irish Baroque Orchestra, La Grande Chapelle, Royal Northern Sinfonia, and the Instruments of Time and Truth. As an ensemble singer, Jonathan works regularly with some of the finest vocal ensembles in the world, most notably Gramophone-award winners Stile Antico, as well as Vox Luminis and the Constellation Choir, and has made recordings with them.

Russian-born Jan Rautio grew up in London and studied at the Royal College of Music and Royal Academy of Music.  A critically acclaimed pianist, composer and conductor, he has performed across the UK, USA, Europe and Russia, plus numerous live broadcasts on BBC Radio 3 with the Rautio Piano Trio.

As Music Director and conductor of the “Diversity” chamber choir, Jan has led them in performances at London’s St Paul’s Cathedral, Gasteig Philharmonie in Munich and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.  His recent compositions include Gloria, laus et honor for choir and a chamber ensemble, and his first String Quartet.  In 2017 he was made Associate of the Royal Academy of Music for his services to music life in the UK.
