Description

Ewan Millar is a prominent young oboist with an increasing following in the UK.  In 2020, he won the Woodwind final of BBC Young Musician of the Year (advancing to the Grand Final) and gave “an exemplary, richly shaded account” (The Guardian) of Navarro’s “Legacy” concerto with the BBC Philharmonic.  Since the competition, he has been performing as a soloist in recitals around the UK, appearing at the Windsor, Cheltenham, and Lake District Summer Music Festivals.  Earlier this year, he won the Gold Medal and prize money of £15,000 in the Wind, Brass and Percussion category of the Royal Over-Seas League Competition.

As a freelancer, Ewan has performed (as a soloist) with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Aurora Orchestra, Britten Sinfonia, Birmingham Royal Ballet, London Concertante and has played in the orchestra of the Philharmonia, BBC Phil, Royal London Philharmonic Orchestra and Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra.  He also performs with the award-winning Lumas Winds quintet.

Ewan took his undergraduate course at St. Hilda’s College, Oxford and his postgraduate at the Royal Academy of Music, where he was awarded the Bicentennial prize, the Janet Craxton Memorial Prize and the Departmental Oboe prize.  He studied primarily with Melanie Ragge, while also receiving lessons from Christopher Cowie and Patrick Flanaghan to master the Cor Anglais.

Ewan is an artist with both the Tillett Debut and Countess of Munster Recital Schemes, which help to secure further recital opportunities around the country.  Ewan plays a Howarth XM Oboe, which the Gerald Finzi Trust kindly helped him to purchase.

Tomos Boyles, Ewan’s long-time collaborative pianist, also performs with Lumas Winds.  He recently won first prize at the 2025 Dudley International Piano Competition and, amongst other achievements, won first prize at the Wales International Piano Festival, the prestigious Blue Riband at the National Eisteddfod of Wales and first place in the European Piano Teachers (EPTA) competition.  His interviews have been published by the Cross-Eyed Pianist’s “Meet the Artist” series and broadcasted by S4C and BBC Wales.  Now a postgraduate student at the Royal Academy of Music in London, he works under Professor Rustem Hayroudinoff.  He was recently awarded the Royal Academy’s prestigious Bicentenary Scholarship, which will support his studies for an Advanced Artist Diploma next year.  Tomos’ studies are generously supported by the Countess of Munster Musical Trust, the John Fussell Memorial Trust Fund, the Robert Turnbull Piano Foundation and the William Mealings Award.
